Description
This Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand product was originally part of the Acros Organics product portfolio. Some documentation and label information may refer to the legacy brand. The original Acros Organics product / item code or SKU reference has not changed as a part of the brand transition to Thermo Scientific Chemicals.
General description
- D-Cycloserine was originally isolated from Streptomyces orchidaceus and is currently formulated as an oral antibiotic
- It is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents but stable under basic conditions, with the greatest stability at pH = 11.5
- D-Cycloserine inhibits L-alanine racemase and D-alanine:D-alanine ligase, 2 enzymes responsible for bacterial cell wall synthesis
- When ingested, D-Cycloserine traverses the blood-brain barrier, potentially causing neurological side effects such as, dizziness, nausea, depression, tremors, etc.
Applications
- D-Cycloserine is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used as a second line agent for treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis, always in combination with other antituberculosis agents
- It is an excitatory amino acid and partial agonist of the NMDA receptor in the central nervous system (CNS), thus playing a potential role in the amelioration of neuropathic pain
- D-Cycloserine has also been shown to play a role in neural connectivity, and is therefore used to study treatment applications in anxiety disorders and schizophrenia
